Student Involvement: Increase diverse student involvement in the development and implementation of strategies to reduce violence.
- ACTION STEP: Support the implementation of NNPS Citizenship Education Program K-12.
- ACTION STEP: Create/expand student run committees (peer mediators) to assist in resolving conflict.
- ACTION STEP: Provide opportunities for youth to develop creative media campaigns to promote nonviolence.
- ACTION STEP: Increase leadership skills and expand the leadership roles of youth.
Violence Prevention Programs: Increase evidence-based programs specifically designed to prevent/reduce violence in learning environments.
- ACTION STEP: Explore the establishment of a course that addresses cultural differences to enhance one’s self-esteem.
- ACTION STEP: Develop and implement effective, safe and secure Out of School Suspension programs for youth suspended for violence to include anger management and conflict resolution components.
- ACTION STEP: Provide opportunities related to training on behavior management and conflict resolution skills.
- ACTION STEP: Support the full implementation and maintenance of Al’s Pals in all elementary schools.
- ACTION STEP: Expand bullying prevention programs to include bus safety.
- ACTION STEP: Fully implement and maintain Life Skills and Class Action programs in the middle schools.
- ACTION STEP: Continue the implementation of the Student Assistance Program in the high schools.
- ACTION STEP: Implement effective and age appropriate anger management
programs.
- ACTION STEP: Utilize Resource Officers to increase Gang Prevention and Awareness programs for parents, teachers, administrators, and students in all middle and high schools.
- ACTION STEP: Continue programs provided by Guidance Counselors that build positive relationships anger management, self esteem, etc.
- ACTION STEP: Increase awareness of the NNPS Student CrimeLine.
- ACTION STEP: Continue “Safe School” fairs to provide information on available services, opportunities for involvement, and information on positive youth development as well as indicators of participation in risk behaviors such as gangs, substance abuse, truancy, and delinquency.
Early Intervention: Increase early intervention strategies for children identified with academic deficiencies to reduce potential involvement in violent behavior.
- ACTION STEP: Create an interagency committee for “academic” /behavior intervention.
- ACTION STEP: Increase awareness of Supplemental Education Services (S.E.S.) from various vendors that provide free service to students identified as failing.
- ACTION STEP: Insure schools’ utilization of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
